Stepping Out on the Water

In the song “Oceans” by Hillsong it talks about being called out on the water, where feet may fail, but having faith that God will uphold you.

In Matthew 14 it tells of when Peter saw Jesus walking on water. Peter called out to Jesus that if it was really him to call Peter out on the water as well. Jesus called to Peter, “come.” Peter got out of the boat (his comfort zone) and walked toward Jesus BUT he began noticing all the wind and waves – all the obstacles around him. Peter let doubt overshadow what God had called him to do, let his eyes be fixed somewhere other than on Jesus and when that happened, he began to sink. Just then, Jesus grabbed hold of him and rescued him asking “why did you doubt?”

Why did Jesus rescue Peter? Because Peter had enough faith to make the step Jesus had called him to do. Faith is about trust and growth in God. There’s a line in the song that says “feet may fail and fear surrounds me, you’ve never failed and you won’t start now” If He calls you to do something, have enough faith to ‘step out on the water’ and keep your eyes fixed on Him. He’ll carry you the rest of the way.
Matthew 14: 22-32
